High School Biology Department: Student Activity Showcase
Biology is a subject that requires the combination of theory and practice. Apart from imparting theoretical knowledge, the High School Biology Department creates opportunities for students to observe the biological phenomena around them and build a platform for students to summarize the biological rules from what they have observed, thus enhancing students’ curiosity about life and nature. Since March, the Biology Department has organized a series of teaching and learning activities in each grade to let the students get close to nature and experience the mysteries of biology.
The House Mentor from the Biology Department provided a House activity for students in Grades 9 and 10 to grow Aristolochiaceae. During the activity, students recorded the process of plants from seed to germination, developing and fruiting. In this activity, students could feel the charm of plants’ growth and development and understand more about the formation process of plant organs. Students in Grade 10 have been learning about biochemical processes such as respiration and photosynthesis since the beginning of the semester. To improve the understanding of these biological processes, students described these reactions in a vivid way using hand-drawn designs and/or videos. Through this kind of theory-themed art-creation activity, students deepened their cognition and memorization of biochemical reactions, and promoted themselves to reflect on the mechanisms of these biochemical reactions.
In the senior group, biology course activities are also in full swing. Students in Grade 11 set off on an activity to distinguish plants. At the Shanghai Botanical Garden, students were required to go to appointed locations according to the directions and maps, search for specific plants referred to in the introduction of the garden, observe and take photos of the whole plant and organs such as stems, leaves, flowers, and cones. While enjoying the beauty of the botanical garden and breathing the fresh air, students learned the skills of identifying some plant species and gained a more specific understanding of the introduction of plant structures in the course. Students in Grade 12 went to the laboratory to observe the rabbits. In the experiment, the students measured the body length, front- and back-limb length, and other data of the rabbits, and observed the behavior of them when they are with fellow rabbits. This activity deepened the students' understanding of the common characteristics and habits of mammals and developed the observation skills required in biology research.
Various teaching activities enable students to have more participation in the study of biology. Students can research and summarize the natural laws of biology in experiments and observations and explore the vast-life world together with teachers.
