G7 YD Class: Reframing Mistakes

April 4, 2023

On March 30, 2023, students were all gathered in their homerooms to take the Youth Development class that comes once a week. For this week’s YD, the topic was about Reframing Mistakes. The goal of the lesson was for students to “Recognize that everyone makes mistakes and that our mistakes do not define us. Celebrate mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve. Forgive yourself for past mistakes to clear a path to self-love and growth”.

First, the teachers excouraged students to think of a mistake they have made in life, and then asked themselves questions such as, “What are common responses to mistakes?” and “How do those types of responses make us feel?” After some realistic and detailed responses that students gave, the teachers then introduced a new aspect for responding to these mistakes, such as, “I’m glad I made this mistake because it’s another footstep to my destination!” or “Great, now we know more than we do before.”

Next, students got to experience how to reframe their mistakes in action. For this activity, students played a game of “Find the Passcode” and they were instructed to applause or cheer every time someone made a mistake. There were plenty of applauses, indicating that students were making mistakes but their classmates were cheering them on. Then, after the exciting game, it was time to reflect. Students were then asked questions like “Why were mistakes helpful in this game?” “How did we reframe mistakes as a group?” and “What mood did reframing mistakes create in the group?” It was pretty clear that the game accomplished it’s goal by creating an overall positive impression on “mistakes” by simply reframing them.

Finally, the teacher went on to present some famous mistakes that led to amazing inventions, such as microwaves and x-rays. These mistakes impacted the entire world and changed people’s lives. To wrap up the lesson, students played a game of Wordle, which involved making many mistakes in order to achieve victory.

Through this lesson, it is expected that our students will learn to reconstruct their mistakes and grow from the mistakes they have made.
