Puxi G4-5: Family-School Collaboration Paves the Way for Success
Recently, the fourth and fifth grades of SHSID Puxi Campus held the first parents’ meetings for this semester respectively. Under the topic of “cultivating independent learners”, teachers introduced the school curriculum, educational goals, character and moral education, psychological education and the school activities of the two grades.
Ms. Zhuo, supervisor of the fourth grade in Puxi, introduced to the parents the basic information and various school activities, such as the “Grade Collaboration” to cultivate good learning habits, the “Lunch Clubs” to bring more fun in lunch recess, the “Community Service” to develop students’ morality, etc. In addition, Ms. Zhuo also suggested parentsmake sure that students can have sufficient sleep time at home, form the habit of doing house chores, and be careful with the use of electronic products.
Ms. Lu, supervisor of the fifth grade in Puxi, also gave parents an overview of the daily life of the fifth graders in school and the various ways in which the school can provide for students. For example, there are “Personal Growth” classes to develop students' core values and “Kindness Challenge Week” to teach children to be kind. Also, outside of the school, there are “Parent Classes” that provide parents with education-related guidance and “Teacher Consultation” that directly connects them with the relevant teachers. As a graduation year, the fifth grade has many graduation-related activities, such as the shooting of graduation photos and the design of class logos and slogans.
In order to strengthen home-school cooperation, Ms. Lu emphasized some future directions that the school and parents can work together on, such as strengthening the education of students' civilized language and trying to make children learn to control themselves and not get addicted to electronic devices in this Internet era.
After that, parents were informed of the school’s positive measures on promoting students’ mental health and personal character. With the introduction from Ms. Sun and Ms. Truelove, parents were aware of the daily mental health sessions and the school counseling service in order to help students improve social emotional skills and interpersonal skills as well as the fourth grade’s core values “GROW”、and fifth grade’s core value “GRADUATE”. After this, parents would know more about how to cooperate with the school to build students’ characters.
Five subjects’ head teachers introduced the subjects’ curriculum, topics, activities, learning methods, and expectations of the students for the school year. Teachers also provided some learning suggestions for students so that they will be able to consolidate the learning better at home.
At last, Ms. Chris, director of Puxi Campus G4-5, communicated with the parents under the topic of ‘Improve Family Education Ideas, Support Children to Succeed in the Future’. In the AI era, what kind of children do we want to cultivate? The thought-provoking question from Ms. Chris triggered plenty of discussion. Ms. Chris provided several directions to answer this question, including cultivating children’s social adaptability, competency, positive mindset, reasoning skills, teamwork skills and motivation. Under the guideline of “Cultivating Independent Learners and Responsible Global Citizens”, Ms. Chris believes that as learners, students should be able to establish thinking patterns during learning, while as educators, teachers should help students dig out the thinking behind knowledge. To make a good transition from primary school to junior high school and better help prepare children for the next stage of life, the school focuses more on cultivating higher-order thinking skills and self-direction in academics; while in character and integrity education, the school focuses on personal development, social awareness and global consciousness shaping, both of which are combined to cultivate excellent talents for the future. Ms. Chris also suggested that parents could ask their children for advice, ask their children why, give them more space, in order to improve their cognitive ability, thinking ability and self-oriented ability. It’s hoped that parents can help their children learn to study and reinforce family education behaviors.
The cooperation between home and school with the same goal is necessary to build children's path to success. Let's work together and focus on our children's growth.
