Grades 9-10 House Program Activity: Career Planning and Book Sharing - Career-Planning Guide & Youth Dream Builder
On Marth 29, the two periods of 9th- and 10th-grade CAS were focused on career planning and book sharing. The design of the career planning courses has combined the concepts of high school career guidance, aiming to play a leading role in self-awareness, interest exploration, professional learning, and career exploration for students in grades 9-10. The original intention of reading sharing is to create a reading atmosphere with mentors in different Houses, inspiring deep thinking. Before the activities, the mentors communicated with each other, shared their course schedules, enriched the theoretical knowledge of career guidance, and sorted out the planning route of different fields.
Students were divided into rooms based on their house mentors they chose according to their interests at the beginning of the semester. As the bell rang and the students settled down, each mentor began their lecture on sharing advice on planning out future careers. They had different fields of specialties: some explained the importance of the STEM subjects and offered numerous corresponding career options; some indicated the benefits of writing and public speaking and gave specific examples. Some stressed establishing a sense of identity and provided various resources as reference; and most of them displayed their own experience and their previous students’ career paths. It was an invaluable opportunity for students to brainstorm and plan the directions of their futures with the assistance of their chosen House mentor. For a duration of 40 minutes, students listened attentively to the guidance that could change their lives.
In the second period, the students were invited to share a book of their choice to their House with a short presentation. There were virtually no limitations as to the content, so the students shared various types of books. Many introduced works regarding their interests and passions in the area of the House, and others recommended guides that enabled improvement in productivity and enrichment in knowledge. The diversity in the subject of the books, in turn, promoted the development of skills in a variety of fields, thereby effectively encouraging personal growth through the facilitation of different ideas and exploring the new world in this field through reading.
In conclusion, the career-planning and book-sharing activities that took place during CAS on March 29 were crucial chances for students to consider the recommendations and advice from other people, whether classmates or teachers, to grow and gain new plans for the prospective future.
