Grade 10: New Semester - Zhentao Gallery

February 27, 2023

As the new semester has begun, the art exhibition in the Zhentao Gallery marked its beginning with newly-displayed artworks on the second floor of Zhentao Building. For every two to four weeks, student artists at SHSID get to take turns and show their original artworks in the hallways, sharing creative inspirations and motivations with fellow students. For the first exhibition of the second semester, Sabrina from class 10(11) shared her colorful collection of artworks—most of them being portraits of herself.

“I like to draw self-portraits with creative twists,” she wrote in her introduction poster. “It’s a way for me to observe myself with new perspectives”. Sabrina is a 10th-grade student who aspires to be an artist who communicates with others through the relatable aspects of her personal narrative. In the three self-portraits that are displayed in the hallway, she expressed three different aspects of her life that many other teenagers can relate to. The portrait of herself as a child, that is fading into the background by morphing into old toys, represented the loss of innocence people experience in the state of adolescence. The portrait of herself floating with koi fish—the largest piece among the artworks—depicted the hope of finding one’s definite self-identity. The portrait of herself in the hidden world of a fishbowl, invited the audience into her imaginary world of ‘inner space’. The other two pieces touched on the subjects of consciousness/societal pressure—connecting reality with her surreal illustrations of the world.

With her hope to comfort and communicate with fellow teenagers through her work, Sabrina wrote that she is looking forward to seeing other student artists’ artworks as well. The art exhibition of the Zhentao Gallery will continue to introduce different student artists, encouraging students to be creative and stay motivated.
