G8 Math Project: Perceiving the Beauty of Mathematics in Life
Mathematics is not only a school subject but also has a wide range of applications in life. In order to let students better understand the practical application of mathematical knowledge, the eighth-grade teachers organized a unique mathematics project, aiming to encourage students to better solve mathematical problems in daily life and to further feel the charm of mathematics.
Over the past two weeks, the 8th-grade students have formed study groups and actively worked on the practical application topics set in the project. The topic contains three different categories of practical problems, all of which are closely related to current life. One was about disease control, exploring how public health agencies can prevent influenza outbreaks from becoming epidemics. The second was on tsunami warning systems, which focused on the question, "how can we warn people before a tsunami occurs so that they can escape before the waves reach the shore?" The last question is about how a city can ensure that it has adequate clean water resources. It is interesting to note that these questions represent not only the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals but also a true reflection of the world people live in now.
Students completed their projects by conducting diverse research and studies in response to background information and possible solutions already proposed by professionals. At the same time, students practiced teamwork skills, with different group members assigned to various tasks. Some were to complete the questions on the activity task paper, others were to compile information on the causes of the problems, the impact on people and society, and the related solutions, while other members were responsible for the PPT and poster presentations. Finally, each group member reflected and concluded together.
During this project, students were challenged with a variety of skills, such as computational and logical thinking skills, retrieval and research skills, as well as time management and self-reflection skills. Students with different learning styles all gained a lot. This G8 Math project also provided students with a more intuitive and deeper understanding of mathematics, which encouraged them to be more active in experiencing mathematics in their lives.
