G8 YD Class:Digital Literacy

The internet is now a mobile and developed place. For every student at SHSID, researching for the required evidence online seems a piece of cake. To make the eighth-grade students more proficient at finding information online, Youth Development class on the afternoon of November 17th provided a chance for them to practice distinguishing fake information from reliable evidence.

After the class bell rang, the teachers entered the classroom and showed the students a video, which told a story about a young man who made money by disseminating fake news. In the video, he earned a great amount of money more than other people in the town. However, was this method moral or not? This issue was discussed by the whole class. Some students thought that it was right to earn enough money for family and friends, while other students disagreed no matter how harsh the situation was -- unrealistic news should not be published.

After an engaging discussion between teacher and students, the topic of the class transitioned into distinguishing true and false evidence online. The students took out their computers and practiced searching for websites on the internet and judging their reliability. After the teacher's guidance and teamwork discussions, the whole class quickly grasped several important reminders: check the credibility of the author, the website’s accountability, and whether the information is in accordance with common sense.

Every student has learned many new skills from this YD class. Let us look forward to more exciting courses in the future!
