The Original Math Drama Is Coming

Euclid's The Elements is a renowned western mathematical text while The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art is famous for its leading role in Eastern mathematical studies. What will spark if the two works meet one another? A group of passionate high school students from Shanghai High School International Division will bring you onto the journey of exploring the history of mathematics through an original play When “The Elements” Meets “The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art”. In the play, the books come alive as characters, guiding the audience on a journey through the key moments in mathematical history. Through recounting and juxtaposing the stories of both Eastern and Western mathematicians throughout the ages, the play explores the fundamental differences between the Eastern and Western approaches to math, as well as how such differences could be harnessed for creation. This play aims to recount the outstanding achievements of ancient Chinese mathematics from an international perspective, spread the Chinese mathematical culture, and contribute to "the 21st-Century Chinese math dream".

Throughout the past few months, our students have been composing, studying, and rehearsing the script carefully and meticulously. At lunchtime, after school, or at home, they could always be seen perusing over their parts. Moreover, several teachers from our Math department also participated in the interpretation and analysis of the script by giving academic guidance to students. After months of long and arduous preparation, the play is finally ready, and it will debut at Shanghai High School's Blackbox Theater on November 24th at 5 p.m. Though the offline performance is only available to teachers and students of our school, they will livestream the performance for any and all interested in viewing online.
