Puxi G1-3: Step Into the World of Books and Let Imagination Flow
Week 8 is Author’s Week for grades 1-3 students in Puxi campus. The three grades’ teachers introduced the works of three different well-known authors to the students. Wild imagination, funny characters, as well as lively and interesting storylines were all around during the week.
This week G1 was filled with lots of storytelling by the author, Mo Willems. From The Pigeon Has to Go to School to Knuffle Bunny, all the stories that Willems creates were filled with imagination that the students all enjoyed. The students started off the week in their most comfortable pajamas. They read Mo Willem’s books in class, in the library, and even outside wearing their pajamas. The following days were filled with fun little activities about the characters in Mo Willem’s books. The characters Gerald and Piggie came to life when the students made paper puppets of the two popular characters. From there the week took a surprisingly artsy turn when students learned to draw, Pigeon, from Mo Willems himself. It was so amazing to see all the talented artists that are in grade one this year. The week ended with the students dressed up as their favorite character from their favorite book. It was amazing to see all the characters that came to life on that day, from Dog Man to Harry Potter.
Grade 2 children had great fun learning more about the author, Dav Pilkey, who has written some of their favorite books, Dog Man and Captain Underpants. Students were amazed to discover that Dav had actually visited SHSID before and shocked to discover that the sketch that he drew is still hanging up in the Primary Library for them to see. Our Grade 2 Teachers have also been very impressed with the writing on display from our fantastic students. Writing to Dav Pilkey himself, or one of his many famous characters like the titular two from his series as well as 80-HD, Petey etc., students put together some exceptional examples of letter writing. Taking inspiration from his writing format, we have also seen many biographical comics and Fliporamas (simple two picture animations) produced. The best biographical comics saw our children manage to capture a key story from their life while integrating a level of humor both visually and literarily.
Author’s Week came to a crescendo on Friday when students brought in their favorite Dav Pilkey books to read with their friends. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their favorite stories with each other and joyful laughter was heard throughout the halls. Some of that could have also been due to seeing their teachers with bald caps and giant underwear on as they tried their best to look like more literal heroes.
All lovers of chocolate factories, of giant peaches, of big friendly giants should meet here! This week SHSID students in third grade were celebrating the impossibly silly, strange, and creative world of renowned British novelist Roald Dahl. Teachers had arranged for fun and engaging projects—from thinking up zany new characters fit for Dahlian spinoff stories, to designing the next crazy candy in Willy Wonka’s factory, to putting on their engineering hats and designing cantankerous contraptions like the one seen in Charlie and the Glass Elevator. Students would tap into their creative sides to get those pencils scribbling, markers doodling, and imaginations flowing. Naturally, they would also have plenty of time to sink into Dahl’s books themselves, exploring beloved titles such as The BFG, The Witches, Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and so many more.
Over the course of a week, students in G1-3 at SHSID Puxi campus met three well-known authors. They were immersed in the sea of books and took adventures with the characters. They also learned to understand the truth from the stories and absorb the power of knowledge. We believe that this week's extraordinary experience will enrich their childhood memories!
