Grade 9: Assembly—Awarding Ceremony & Time Management

October 24, 2022

On October 18th, Grade 9 students gathered in the lecture hall in the basement floor of Zhentao Building. Anticipation buzzed in the air. This week, contrary to the usual routine of one assembly meeting per week, there were two. What was supposed to happen that needed two assemblies, one Tuesday and one Friday? They were about to find out.

As it turned out, quite a few interesting things were going to happen. First, students from the higher grades came to promote their coding competition. STEMDoge also introduced its new activities in celebration of Bit Day: a scavenger hunt with trivia questions scattered throughout Zhentao Building and a theater fair in which people got to play a game where the character was controlled by sound, learned how to tune sounds, and even created their own music pieces! All these clubs were organized by students and the activities were held by students. Their efforts reflected their passion for science and technology from the bottom of their hearts.

In addition, an awarding ceremony of the Chinese debating competition was held. As the winners came to the stage, the hall was instantly filled with cheers and applause. Congratulations to all the prizewinners!

On Friday, Jennifer from class 9(3) was invited to make a speech about time management. She started with a relatable story: how she spent more than a day (24 hours) on social media a week at the beginning of the semester. She also placed herself as a person who had once suffered from ineffective time control, and set the mood of the presentation in a much lighter style. She then provided a definition for what well time-managing student really is, which is people who finish the same amount of work faster than “procrastinators”. By making this comparison, she showed the students how by managing time and save time for extracurricular activities or hobbies.

Then, she transitioned from the problem to the solution by first focusing on the main direct difficulty, which was an appropriate and healthy sleeping and studying schedule. Jennifer also provided her personal recommendations such as the pomodoro technique and her favored account she used when studying to focus on the work at hand. Lastly, she ended her speech by looking at the problem in the long-run: she suggested utilizing school resources such as the planner to organize the work load and reflecting on places to improve.

Then, in a round of applause, Jennifer’s presentation came to an end. Hope each student could improve on time-management.
