Boys’ Volleyball Team Wins Home Opener

October 24, 2022

The SHSID Stallions U19 Boys’ Volleyball team hosted YKPao in the opening match of the SSSVL Volleyball League on Thursday, October 20th. As the Stallions beat YKPao 2-0 last year, they expected another victory. As expected, the Stallions were able to bring back a win for the Stallions’ home opener game with a score of 2-0.

With the home advantage, the Stallions were able to start the game with an edge of 5 points. Being the first match of the season, both teams were not in their best conditions. However, with the crowd's help, the Stallions brought the match tempo to their side. With the consecutive points, YKPao struggled to find the answer for the route to attack; the players brought the score to 12:4. Seeing how the opponents were under immense pressure, the Stallions unleashed a devastating offensive push, carrying out more attacks using the middle blocker. The Stallions showed no mercy; the setter (Hayden Sawanabori) and middle blocker (Matthew Li) presented unforgiving plays like quick sets and unstoppable spikes. The libero (Ken Ogawa) showed solid defense, and the Stallions brought a win for the first set at 25:14.

After the first set, the Stallions brought up a new formation of players. The Stallions had to get used to the new formation and had a rough start with a score line of 5:5. As multiple points had passed, the Stallions called a timeout to bring back what they did the first set. Then, they were able to run away with the score of 10:8. With the two-point lead, the Stallions decided to play more offensively as the match continued. The Stallions were making mistakes like touching the net or receiving errors, but still leading by 5 points at 17:12. The Stallions still struggled with small mistakes giving YKPao a chance to turn the tables around. As the match continued, the YKPao team caught up more and more by two points, 23:21. The Stallions ended the game 25:21, but the players weren't satisfied with their performance seeking improvement the next match.

The victory against YKPao brought confidence to the Stallion players. The next game is against U Link on November 7th at 5pm in the school gym. We hope to see you on the sidelines as the Stallions strive for their second victory!
