G6-7 | English Storytelling Competitions
In late autumn, the annual story telling competitions for SHSID G6-7 students finally arrived. In order to present the most exciting stories, each student constantly revised and polished their speeches and gave a two to three minutes’ presentation in class. The best speakers selected by the English class then took part in a second selection in their grade, and finally the best of the best, who passed the selection process, made it to the final of this storytelling presentation.
On the afternoon of 20 October, the sixth-grade speech contest came to an “epilogue”. The task for the speakers was to create a mystery or adventure story, and the competitors used the writing skills they had learned in English class to use their imagination to present a whimsical story to the audience. Emily from 6(7) told the story of three friends who were trapped in a mountain and eventually managed to be rescued after a lot of difficulties. One of the presentations by Elaine in 6(8) was about a psychiatric woman who committed eleven consecutive murders after seeing visions in an old mirror. Kelly in 6(10) told the story of a naughty and curious young girl who accidentally wandered into a magical world, and a thrilling fight was going to begin. The expressions of competitors were generous, the plots were engaging and everyone enjoyed the competition.
In the end, Emily from class 6(7) won first prize of S/S+ group, and then the first prize of H/H+ group was awarded to Elaine from class 6(8). Congratulations to the winners and all the participators!
Next, in the second YD lesson, competitors of grade 7 also began their storytelling presentations. During the competition, the contestants went onto the stage with vivid stories accompanied by good body language.
The seventh grade’s storytelling competition of this year included all things from fantastical stories based off Greek myths depicting the conflict of good and evil with heroic protagonists battling armies of formidable enemies, to themes of ‘coming of age’ taking the audience through the characters journey finding themselves in relation to the world and the people around them.
All the audience were deeply mesmerized, sometimes laughing with the lecturer and sometimes applauding for them. Through this speech contest, everyone had a good opportunity to practice their English and speech skills. They took at least their first step toward conquering their stage fright completely. In the end, all the adjudicators and judges finally decided to grant the first prize to 7(10) Paige of S/S+ level, and the winner of H/H+ level is 7(12) Kelan.
The storytelling competitions not only helped the students to develop their oral skills, but also inspired them to create their own English. We would like to thank the contestants for the wonderful competition and the ASB members, teachers, and staff behind the scenes for making the event a success.
