October 20, 2022

On October 18th, the Linguistics Club actively participated in the Science Fair to promote different languages and cultures on campus.

Club Showcase

During the afternoon of October 18th, the Linguistics Club joined the STEM Club showcase. In order to attract more students to enjoy the learning of languages and cultures, the members of the Linguistics Club integrated more interactive activities. Instead of solving traditional linguistic puzzles, the members invited the participants to challenge saying the same words in more than three different languages. They also focused on different dialects, leading to some interesting discussions of Chinese culture.

Lecture on Written History of Nahuatl

On the afternoon of October 18th, a lecture on the written history of Nahuatl was given. The guest speaker was Mr. Zhang, a teacher from the Department of Western Languages of Shanghai International Studies University. Although the lecture was held after class, it attracted many students and teachers to the world of Latin American culture.

Nahuatl, the second largest language in Mexico, originated in Central America. The development stages in Central America include the Early Preclassical, Middle Preclassical, Late Preclassical, Early Classical, Late Classical, Early Postclassical, and Late Postclassical periods. Taking the opportunity of this lecture, the students were exposed to the Nahuatl language for the first time. They had a comprehensive understanding of the background of the formation of Nahuatl and the changes in the writing system. During the interactive part, they had the chance to imitate the syllables and words of classical Nahuatl, from which they felt the charm of Nahuatl.

At the end of the lecture, Ms. Li, the mentor of the club, expressed her gratitude to Mr. Zhang on behalf of the teachers and students and encouraged the members to understand the history, culture, and thinking mode through the learning of its language, as well as to adopt a more tolerant and humble attitude towards cultural differences. After the lecture, many students still craved more. They gathered around to exchange their feelings and expressed their desire of studying languages and joining the Linguistics Club.
