G8 Long Rope Competition: Jump! Jump! Jump!

October 13, 2022

In the afternoon of October 13th, SHSID grade 8 students held a long rope jumping competition outside the Zhen Tao building. This competition was divided into two groups: one is the whole class together as a group; the other is the elite group consisted of eight elites who were selected out of the twenty-person classes. The final ranking would be determined by the 'whole class group' ranking and the ranking number of the 'elite group' -- the smaller the sum, the higher the ranking. The teachers also participated in the competition.

The eighth graders were confident about this competition. In the previous short week, everyone had gone through hard training, even those in the class who believed they couldn’t skip were able to learn skipping from the one week of practice. They had their own understanding on rope skipping: where should we be jumping? When should we jump? Specifically, how should you jump over the rope whipping around? These questions were answered through the training session.

The atmosphere of the rope skipping competition was enthusiastic yet tense. If you jump too slow, you can increase fault tolerance, but it also makes it difficult to get a good outcome; jumping too fast will cause a low fault tolerance, and if you make a mistake, your result would be gone. In short, even if the students have gone through multiple practices, they also felt nervous because there is no room for mistakes in the practical operation. But even if they felt nervous, the people were still supporting their class and trying to mitigate the tense feeling during the competition.

The cheering during the official competition was fierce, the yelling for their teammates was hearable miles away; the jumping of the eighth graders was steady, they had practiced for this moment for multiple P.E. classes. Their spirits were hot, as if they were burning; their speeds were fast, everyone was taking the risk and competing for higher and better outcomes for their classes.

In the end, three classes, 8 (8), 8(6), 8(7) won the championship, through close teamwork, continuous efforts and strong mental quality. Both in and before the competition, the whole grade embodies the excellent Olympic spirit. No matter the joy of putting in effort together as a class and successfully winning the competition, or the feeling of training and sweating hard but not being able to get through the last obstacle of ‘nervous’ and having to accept the outcome of the competition, both will probably become one of the most valuable memories of eighth graders in SHSID.
