Grade 10 Assembly: LOOK Fashion Show

September 26, 2022

On September 21st, the tenth-grade LOOK club hosted a mini fashion show during the assembly. They wanted to express their fashion senses as high school students and share them with the grade. Later on, after the show ended, three members of the club shared some of their thoughts on the current fast fashion industry in an inspiring way.

As we all know, clothes from the fast fashion industry are produced using toxic chemicals and simple fabrics; their poor quality and over-reliance on internet trends make them short-lasting. Nevertheless, the production and existence of the fast fashion industry also has resulted in severe environmental problems. Nonrenewable clothing materials such as synthetic polymers and cotton are often prioritized in these industries. And the back side of those cheap materials is their impact on the environment around us. For example, when synthetic polymer products are placed in the washing machine, they will release microplastics into the water system. These particles’ inability to biodegrade in marine environments makes it possible for plankton to ingest them. These microplastics will eventually reach the entire food web and impact every corner of the environment around us.

In the end, the speakers advocated for everyone to save the environment around us by lowering their engagement in the fast fashion industry and reusing vintage items at home. "Fashion basically functions as a cycle"; therefore, things that trended decades ago might come back once again. As long as we have the confidence and ability to spot life's beauties, every piece of clothing will look great on us. So, why not provide these retro items with new values when we have the ability to do so?
