Grade 11:Junior Project Showcase

June 14, 2022

SHSID has a large interdisciplinary project course every school year starting from 9th grade. The Junior Project is the large project for 11th graders throughout the school year, where ‘junior’ is meant to be for 11th graders, much like how ‘freshman’, ‘sophomore’, and ‘senior’ are for 9th, 10th, and 12th graders, respectively. It is a ‘big’ project because of its ambitious theme, high level of integration, and long duration. Specifically, the 11th graders use the knowledge and skills they have accumulated as students in various subjects to find their answers in small groups over the course of a year based on a guiding theme, and then present each group's thinking to their teachers and classmates at the end of the year.

The Junior Project theme for this year's 11th-grade class was: What can we do to improve the quality of life in Shanghai? This is a very broad theme, and the idea is to give students the space to think more broadly, both at a macro and micro level, so that they will not only have written knowledge, but will use knowledge and skills from across disciplines - at least six disciplines – in which to engage in the life of our city!

The project begins in early September and continues throughout the academic year with a monthly phased breakdown of tasks in between. Students form their own groups of 6-8 students to divide up the work, think deeply, and even complete product design, etc., and to enhance their individual time management and team project planning skills. Of course, each group has a supervisor who provides guidance and advice and follows up on the progress of the project on a monthly basis in preparation for the final overall evaluation of the project. Each student will have to go deep into the city of Shanghai to explore possible research directions and think about what quality of life is. How can we improve quality of life? And how can we assess the improvement of quality of life? Does an improvement in quality of life for some people mean a decrease in quality of life for others? These are all questions that each of us needs to think deeply about, and in fact, the depth of our thinking about this issue is an important factor in the success of the project. The Junior Project stimulates students' intellectual and academic potential, promotes students' caring for people and communities around them, and enables students to apply what they have learned.

After this year's research, all the 11th graders have completed their Junior Project and some groups have even also given complete product designs. This is the third time our students have undertaken and delved into a long-term project that is relevant to them, and with the experience gained, the students are both deeply challenged and excited to try it out!
