High School Biology Department: Life around Us—2022 Biology Week
As small as the microorganisms attached to a grain of dust are, or as large as a towering tree is, living organisms are everywhere around us. As a natural science that studies all kinds of organisms, the content of biology is comprehensive and diverse. In the daily teaching of the subject, the high school Biology Department not only strives to establish dynamic and efficient learning classrooms, but it is also committed to establishing a series of subject-specific activities to stimulate students' passion for exploring the biological world. Based on the theoretical knowledge they gained, they can observe, record, analyze, display, and perceive this wonderful world full of life in a scientific way.
In June of every year, the Biology Department runs and oversees Biology Week. On June 1st this year, the 2022 Biology Week activities kicked off as scheduled. A series of exciting online activities allowed students to learn and have fun.
Our lives are undoubtedly excellent sources for learning and applying biological knowledge. If you want to answer the doubts in your mind, a solid theoretical foundation is essential. During Biology Week, an online platform for the Bio-Knowledge Bee was established. The questions ranged from ecological interactions at macro levels to molecular mechanisms at micro levels, and everyone had the opportunity to try. The students participated in the activity enthusiastically and competed with their peers; in the nervous heartbeats of answering questions, the concept of knowledge was further strengthened.
On the basis of the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and starting from students’ own interest, exploring the extension of relevant concepts in the form of a project can allow students to thoroughly understand and master the relevant content and improve their independent learning ability. At the same time, the open display platform can also stimulate students’ imagination and creativity. Although cellular biology technology sounds far away from us, in daily life, it shows its magic in various fields. Based on their own understanding and investigation of related technologies, tenth-grade students carefully produced posters and videos to introduce the advanced technologies in their own eyes. Despite parasites being appalling, as long as they are properly controlled, there is no need to worry about them. The seniors combined their knowledge inside and outside the classroom and drew the leaflet for parasite control like experts. During this Biology Week activity, these ingenious student projects were presented online.
Although the results of cutting-edge research are released every day, some books, with their unique perspectives and in-depth discussions on specific fields, allow us to stand on the shoulders of the wise and see farther. The Biology Week activity collected recommendation videos of extracurricular biology books from high school students. Based on their own reading, the students recommended many excellent books to their peers, from the secret of sleep to the selfish gene; after reading these books, you will also be greatly impressed by the power of books.
Have you ever imagined the future world with the development of biotechnology? As an open activity that has not yet been closed, the creation of biological science fiction has marked an ellipsis for this Biology Week activity. Let us wait and see what the future world will look like in the eyes of the students.
During the process of participating in the colorful online Biology Week activity, the students have a deeper understanding of this vibrant and beautiful world. We hope that all the students can continue to treat our lively partners with scientific eyes, intelligent brains, respectful hearts, and continue to brave the winds and waves on the road of exploration.
