Students Shined in the 2021 High School Art Festival
“Ding!” Did you hear that? It must have been the New Year’s bells chiming! Each year, SHSID holds its jovial art festival towards the end of the semester to showcase the talents of our students. Well, this year was certainly no exception! Let’s take a peek at the annual Art Festival for Grades 9-12 held in the afternoon on December 20-21 and look back on the wonderful memories created.
Grades 9-10
There was a total of 26 performances, featuring a wide variety from dances to a cappella and even magic tricks and surprises from our teachers. Although it was a cold winter day outside the window, the students in the auditorium all felt warm and excited.
The eight hosts and hostesses this year were certainly beyond engaging and kept the audience absorbed and laughing throughout the whole event. The festival began with an impressive intro from the wind ensemble, moving on to a diverse show of dazzling singing and dancing. The performance of the traditional Chinese stand-up comedy “xiangsheng” and magic tricks made the audience burst into laughter. There were not only solo singers, but a cappella and group singing, and even reenactments of a famous musical. As for the dances, there was a variety of pop, Chinese traditional dance, cha-cha, ballet, as well as a cute, memorable performance of the “Mickey Mouse Club House” dance using bedsheets. There was also a collection of bands that incorporated all kinds of instruments such as the xylophone and the janggu, a type of Korean drum set.
Of course, these weren’t all that we saw. The lottery also caused the audience cheers, where a few lucky friends were selected to receive a gift from the beloved Santa. Towards the end of the festival, the students were surprised by a secret teachers’ performance which took the audience onto a voyage through ancient China and the grandeur of its dynasties.
This year’s art festival was definitely a memorable experience, full of laughter, excitement, and joy of the Christmas season. We wish you and your family and friends all the best this wonderful season. Have a merry Christmas and enjoy your holiday! We look forward to seeing you again in 2022!
Grades 11-12
There were 25 programs in this festival, which was opened by the brisk and melodious "Alvimar Overture" of the wind band, igniting enthusiasm from the whole audience. With solos and choruses including "Martin's Morning", "Love the Way You Lie", "Prosperity Sings All Over", the acoustic and refreshing melodies deeply touched the students. Following the singing, performances of traditional Chinese-style dance, modern dance, and hip-hop including special dance moves like "waiting", "quicksand fall Jane", and "painting skin-confused heart" were all danced vigorously. These dances won a boisterous round of applause
The performances not only consisted of singing and dancing, but also the playing of various musical instruments, which were performed with great elegance. There was even a small magic show named "The Three of Us", in which our students demonstrated their vivid and adept talents. Year after year, the art festival is not only a display of talent, but also a manifestation of students' organization ability: from team formation to program arrangement, from costume arrangement to lighting and special effects. Every single aspect of the grand festival was taken care of by the students.
The festival was also full of pleasant surprises. The lucky draws scattered between the performances brought some small surprises for everyone from time to time, elevating the lively and joyful atmosphere. Finally, the highly anticipated teachers' performance brought the holiday spirit to the pinnacle. The whole student body and facility was immersed in the warm and joyous holiday atmosphere, and with that, the annual Art Festival came to a close.
The annual Art Festival came to a close in the warm and pleasant atmosphere. We also wish all the students and faculties a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
