Next Generation 6G Telecommunication Lecture

December 20, 2021

On December 10th at noon in Zhentao Lecture Hall, students were glad to have Prof. Han Chong from University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University (UM-SJTU)’s Joint Institute to deliver a speech entitled “After 5G, What Is Next?”. First of all, Prof. Han Chong introduced the progress of each telecommunication generation of the past few decades. Specifically, he elaborated the evolution of 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies. Then, he illustrated the convenience brought by these technologies to our work and life in a straightforward manner with vivid and clear language. In addition, he analyzed the frequency band of the next generation of telecommunication and its high utilization over the bandwidth. Afterwards, he initiated a dialogue with several students about the future application scenarios brought on by the next generation of communication, such as multisensory XR applications, autonomous driving, intelligent traffic surveillance, blockchain, distributed ledger technologies, artificial intelligence, the satellite network, and other frontier applications. China started the infrastructure planning and the major research of 6G in 2019, and the next-generation telecommunication will surely lead the advancement of studies in these areas. After the lecture, the students expressed their strong interest in the next generation of telecommunication and asked a series of questions about the development directions and implementation difficulties of 6G. Prof. Han gave his warm response and encouraged them to explore more interesting topics in their lives.

Through this lecture by Professor Han from UM-SJTU Joint Institute, the students have gained the knowledge of the development of frontier telecommunication worldwide, which enlightens their curiosity for science. We believe that, in the near future, the students can go further and further in their pursuit of science and explore more of their interests along the way.
