High School Math Hybrid Learning Open Classes

December 20, 2021

In the middle of December, two teachers of the High School Math Department gave an open class respectively for Grade-9 and -10 hybrid-learning students. Student exploration played a dominant role in these classes. The teaching design showed the cultivation of students’ backward thinking and critical thinking.

Mr. Hong’s Grade-10 open class was on solving functional identities. He didn’t talk about concrete examples to show students exactly how to solve them; instead, he offered several question sets with questions that ranged from easy to hard. Students discussed the questions in groups, trying to come up with clues and summarize the methods. Students were encouraged to go to other groups to continue exploring other question sets when they had finished their own. In the end, students presented their work and Mr. Hong combed through their ideas in a holistic way.

Another of Mr. Hong’s Grade-9 open class was on further exploration of proportions in triangles. Based on a review of a previous homework question that talked about a special case, he abstracted the general situation and guided his students to raise a question, make a conjecture, and prove it. Furthermore, he changed the given and encouraged students to summarize a more general conclusion and use alternative methods to prove it. The design of the guided questions was step by step with typical exercises in between.

These classes took into consideration the characteristics of a hybrid-learning class. Students were very active and engaged as the lesson was very engaging and comprehensive. It was quite effective to let students dominate the class with the guidance of the teacher. Meanwhile, through self-exploration, students not only had a better understanding of the content, but also developed the general method of “raising a question” and “solving a problem” from a higher level, strengthening both backward thinking and critical thinking.

Of course, successful open classes rely on the teachers’ efforts, and also on the collaboration of the teaching groups. Before each open class, the Math teaching groups hold a session for open-class polishing, giving suggestions to the teachers giving open classes. This spirit inspires teachers to present diversified classes and keep improving.
