Puxi Camus Grades 4-5: Go for Reading Gold
Students in grades 4 and 5 have just completed their English reading month, lasting from November 8th through December 3rd. To celebrate the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the students were “going for reading gold” by participating in the Reading Olympics! Each week, students participated in different color events and throughout the month recorded the number of minutes read each week. Just like Olympic athletes, students needed perseverance, motivation, and independent learning skills to complete the tasks. Each task required different skills from the students, whether it was their researching skills, time-management skills, or independent reading skills, students showed grit with each task!

The Reading Olympics began with the opening ceremony, and the teachers recorded a very interesting video of students watching their teachers pass the “torch” and ignite the flame of hope. They also took an Olympic Oath promising to be fair, kind participants throughout the month. Next, each class in grades 4 and 5 was assigned a country that will be participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics. The classes competed for gold, silver, and bronze medals throughout the month, earning points for their country by turning in reading logs and color events.

The first event was to research the country chosen by each student’s class. Children were asked to find out how their country competed in the last Winter Olympics. Then, students showed their learning by making a poster. The next event tapped into students’ prior knowledge of skills taught in class, such as annotating a text to aid in understanding. Students chose from a variety of reading passages about the Olympics, annotated, and then created a postage stamp to interpret what they read creatively. During week three, students continued their research by learning about a famous athlete who participated or will participate in the Olympics. They then made cereal box biographies to show their learning! The final task during the last week was to learn about the Paralympics. Part of being a good sport, whether in the Winter Olympics or at school, is being inclusive of everyone. Once students learned about the Paralympics, students wrote a short story using elements of plot to write a story with the main character participating in a Paralympic event.
The Reading Olympics culminated in the final round of the Storytelling Competition. After active preparation and three rounds of selection, 5 students from each grade were chosen to move onto the final round. Fourth graders recited scary stories they had written the first semester, while 5th grade wrote a narrative with a specific theme. The school is proud of all our participants and gives special congratulations to the gold, silver, and bronze winners!

Teachers are now busy tallying reading minutes, color event scores, and country totals. Students in grades 4 and 5 are eagerly waiting to see which country will win gold, silver, and bronze, as well as the top three readers from each grade. The results will be announced at our next grade assembly! Surprisingly, grades 4 and 5 completed a record-breaking goal of over 50,000 minutes read throughout the Reading Olympics! Students learned a lot about the ancient and modern Olympics, the meaning of symbols, and what it takes to be an Olympic athlete. The teachers of grads 4 and 5hope students will remember the knowledge they have gained as they watch the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and proudly cheer on the athletes.
