The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is a professional symphony orchestra developed from the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Dedicated to symphony promotion, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra has organized a variety of activities including "Neighborhood Concert" and "School Concert". On Nov. 20th, 2021, Shanghai High School was honored to invite masters from the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra to hold a lively chamber-music concert at the Auditorium on campus.

In this event, students had the opportunity to listen to the intertwining melodies of the classical string quartet and the grand harmonies of the brass quintet. The string quartet’s opening “Serenade Nos. 1 & 3”, written by Mozart, were full of life and vigor, whereas the later tango, “Por Una Cabeza”, flew with the souls of the audience. The brass quartet’s “Spirited Away Theme Song” was ethereal yet steady, while the familiar and passionate “Detective Conan Theme Song” elicited the audiences’ childhood memories. Each piece demonstrated the masters’ sophisticated skills and fitting synergies. Their pitch accuracy, rhythm control, dynamics, and cooperation were all what the students could learn from.

After listening to the masters’ performances, students were also eager to try. Three students representing the SHS String Ensemble brought D. Shostakovich’s “Five Pieces for 2 Violins and Piano No. 1”. Five students representing the SHS Wind Ensemble brought the saxophone quintet: “Palladio”. The Philharmonic Orchestra’s co-president, Ms. Xia, and the French horn president, Ms. Xu, commented on their performance. The students benefited a lot from the valuable suggestions.
