Introduction Meeting of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Awards
The 2021 introduction meeting of the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DoE) International Awards was held online on the evening of November 16th. After Ms. Shen and Ms. Xu introduced the content, spirit, and online registration system of the DoE, the five students who won the Bronze Awards and the Silver Awards in the 2020 academic year introduced their experiences and gains during the application process. In Selina’s speech, she shared her experience of participating in the DoE Awards Bronze section. She chose piano as her professional skill and set the goal of successfully performing a complete piano piece of 11 pages long that surpasses level 8 of ABRSM in difficulty. For sports, she chose a sport that she has never learned before: biking. After 6 months, she had successfully reached her goal of riding 10 kilometers. Then she talked about her handmade cards and the Adventure Journey (AJ) to Xi'an, which she chose for service and AJ, respectively. At last, she concluded that DoE has taught her a lot, including better time-management skills. This is due to the fact that sections within the DoE Award requires one to two hours of persistent effort every day in order to achieve the final goal, including the exam weeks. It is exactly such effort and time devoted into the practicing and consolidating of skills for DoE that allows Selina to stand out from all the contestants and succeed in achieving her goals. Finally, Director Liu gave online awards to these students, and together, strongly encouraged more students to join the DoE activities. And at noon on November 17th, Principal Ma and Director Liu also presented certificates to the award winners.
It is said that “DoE Award’s spirit is not in the competitions’ results, but in what we gained along the way. DoE is a process of self-knowledge and self-remodeling. This is an opportunity to try new things and refine existing interests.” So it's not just a competition, it's also a journey on persistence and hard work.
