Primary School Chinese Department: G5 Reflecting on Chinese Character Writing

November 4, 2021

Writing wrong Chinese characters is an inevitable problem in the Chinese learning process. In order to assist students in understanding the meaning of the word and then writing the correct form, fifth grade Chinese teachers assigned the task of collecting miswritten Chinese characters.

The task was not asking student to simply copy the correct form. Instead, this assignment required students to present the often-mistaken point of writing the character and then think about some good methods of mememorizing the handwriting. Students analyzed the character from the meaning of the word, the oracle bone scripts, and the structure of the word. Some students also illustrated the character with their own drawing in order to explain the meaning more vividly, which left a deeper impression on students. Students’ work was also presented on the bullet board so that the whole grade could learn from each other.

In the task of collecting miswritten Chinese characters, students applied their initiative and creativity as well as they practiced independent learning skills and self-reflection skills. We wish after this round of reviewing, student can gain more confidence and write fewer wrong characters on the Chinese test.
