Middle School Biology Department: 6th Graders Investigates Yeast Fermentation

At the beginning of the year, 6th grade students were introduced to the process of the scientific method. To enable students to apply the scientific method for further understanding, teachers arranged some lab work for them. On September 28th, students headed over to the Yifu Building to begin this investigation. The experiment was to study the variables involved in the fermentation of yeast in bread. Students were instructed to design a fair test. They set up four groups under different conditions. The used their knowledge of the independent, dependent, and constant variables necessary for an experiment in their design. After two hours, they recorded their results.

In doing this experiment, students have developed a better grasp of the steps of the scientificmethod. They even gained general knowledge about anaerobic fermentation!
