Department of Social Sciences: SHSID Students Performed Well in the Economics Subcategory of the 2021 John Locke Institute Essay Competition

The John Locke Essay Competition is organized by John Locke Institute, an independent education organization located in Oxford, U.K. Professors at the John Locke Institute are from famous universities like Oxford, Princeton, and Brown University. Every year, the John Locke Institute Essay Competition attracts thousands of international high-school students. The competition requires each submitted essay to be no more than 2,000 words. This year, John Locke Institute received over 4,000 submissions, with only a few hundred standing out to make it onto the shortlist; fewer students made it into the final list of contenders. In the Economics Subcategory, two students from SHSID who wrote about “Whether or not we should abolish minimum wage” received the award of high commendation, receiving a great deal of validation from the experts in the field. The result came in on Sep. 5th at the Oxford Gala Dinner.
