Puxi Campus Grades 1-3: Reading Month: Reading Is Your Passport to Adventure
What a wonderful and busy May it has been for our first to third grades! This month was packed full of fun activities all centered around one of our student’s favorite pastimes, reading. We kicked off the reading month with the two-week Read-A-Thon! The students showed incredible generosity by fundraising for a great cause, set a reading goal, and pledged a certain amount of money for each day that they achieved it. Our students did a splendid job and raised a lot of money for the Make a Wish Foundation, a charity that grants wishes to sick children. The other half of the donation will be for buying books for our homerooms’ class libraries to continue our journey of reading.
In week 12, We had a Reading Buddy activity. Grade one and two students and grade three and eight students paired up and read stories together. It was great to see students read books with their new friends.
Another fun activity was the Poetry Slam Competition. For the first round, each student memorized a poem to recite to his or her peers. The teachers then chose a student to represent the class in the second round of the competition. Wednesday’s PG class was the exciting second round of our Poetry Slam. One person from each class recited their poem to the whole grade and one winner was chosen. We think they should be very proud of themselves.
Keeping with the theme of reading, the subject of May 26th’s PG lesson was DEAR. DEAR is an acronym for Drop Everything And Read. At the sound of the bell, students dropped what they were doing and grabbed a book to read. Our grades 1-3 students love to read, and therefore they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to pick up a book in this week’s PG class. They were very imaginative with their reading positions and made themselves comfortable for a lesson of reading. Some students chose to bring their favorite books from home, and some picked a book from the library. Either way, they had a fantastic time delving into several different stories.
Our reading month ended up with the Chinese Story King of grade one. Each student prepared a short story to tell the whole class in the Chinese lesson; some of these stories were self-created, some were very humorous, some were full of deep meaning, and all of them were well-prepared. Then one story king from each class was chosen and gathered together in Chinese class on May 28th. Their vivid performance attracted the audience. After the performance, there was warm applause and cheers. We are proud of these story kings!
What an enjoyable month for all of our students!
