Team Recyclist Visited an Ice-Pack Manufacturer

May 27, 2021

On May 21st, the Recyclists, a team participating in the China Thinks Big (CTB) competition, traveled to Qingpu District to visit the Shanghai Huizhou Industrial Co., Ltd. The Recyclists are dedicated to researching environmental issues pertaining to ice packs, and, as a team, have successfully advanced to the CTB Global Finals. Huizhou Industrial Co., Ltd. is a provider of complete cold-chain services. In this visit, the team toured one of its seven production bases within the country. As staff members guided them throughout the visit, the Recyclists closely observed the ice-pack manufacturing workshop, the company laboratory, as well as a variety of equipment and tools used in the ice-pack production process.

First, the team members visited the manufacturing workshop. In this area of the factory, each piece of equipment can produce more than 1,000 ice packs per hour. This includes various types of ice packs such as gel ice packs, room-temperature ice packs, freezer ice packs, etc. Team members noted that, while some of the ice bags were in strange and new shapes, others were thicker and bulkier. There is a storage system for the inner contents of ice packs (gel, water, etc.) inside the workshop, and the production base also has a freezer with a temperature of negative 18 °C in order to ensure that the ice packs remain in good condition. Then, the Recyclists visited the laboratory and examined the types of equipment used in testing the functionality of ice-pack products. Instruments observed included a proofing machine, a temperature- and refrigeration-performance tester, an outer-packaging strength tester, an anti-corrosion effect tester, a heat scanner, a viscosity-measuring instrument, and more.

After this visit, the Recyclists now have a deepened understanding of ice packs and the ice-pack production process. Based on this experience, the team has found new directions for further research and has developed more potential methods for taking action.
