World Languages: SHSIDers Won Amazing Results in Two Linguistics Olympiad
This semester two major linguistics competitions took place: the Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO) and the International Linguistics Olympiad China (IOLC) Open Round. The students from SHSID Linguistics Club avidly prepared for them and have won amazing results of both competitions.
Quick look of the Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO)
The third Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO) was held on March 28th, 2021. SHSID was one of the offline test centers.
Eight students from the SHSID Linguistic Club joined the competition after being qualified through the selection within the club. The whole competition endured five hours offline, when the students solved five different linguistics puzzles during the time limit.

Out of total 182 participants from six different countries and regions, including China, Japan, Republic of Korea, etc, joined the competition, and only the top eight students from each delegation could gain an award. Out of the eight students who joined from SHSID, two students successfully ranked among the top 8 in China and won the bronze medal.

The International Linguistics Olympiad China (IOLC) Open Round took place on April 10th, 2021. Nineteen SHSID students participated in the competition. The competition took place for three hours in which the students had to solve five different linguistics puzzles.
Out of the nineteen participating SHSID students, three gained the first award, three gained the second award, and seven gained the third award regarding individual awards; three students were deemed honorable mentions. For team awards, one team gained second award while another team gained third. Eleven students, four students as a team and seven students as individual participants, from the total nineteen are now qualified to pass onto the China Round of the International Linguistics Olympiad taking place in June.
SHISD Linguistics Club
Linguistics is a subject that emphasizes both liberal arts and science. Participants of IOL don’t need to know multiple foreign languages, but they need to have keen observation, rigorous mathematical logic reasoning ability, unconstrained imagination, good teamwork spirit and basic linguistic knowledge to complete the linguistic puzzles.
Organized by the instructor, the SHSID Linguistics Club regularly organizes various student- centered activities: Linguistic Bowl, lectures on introductory linguistics, lectures on multilingual culture, student-centered exploration of linguistic puzzles, student-centered sharing of puzzle-solving ideas and so on.
The Club also has an exclusive official account operated by students: SHSID Linguistics Club, which has "Interviews with Native Speakers", "Language Science Popularization", "IOL Linguistic Puzzles" and other columns to publish language and cultural knowledge regularly.
In summary, all members of the club have access to a variety of language and cultural knowledge. They could constantly experience the infinite charm of world languages, extracting language rules from the complex language phenomena.
