Middle School Section: Awards of SHASTIC
On the evening of March 31st, 2021, Shanghai High School International Division received a great message. The result of the 36th Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest arrived. This year, SHSID received 2 first prizes, 9 second prizes, and 8 third prizes.
At SHSID, there is a group of students dedicated to the exploration of science and aim to solve real-life problems with their knowledge in science. These students enthusiastically participated in the 36th SHASTIC.
Students started working on their research projects in March, 2020 and completed projects in the fields of biology, engineering, and social science.
This year’s SHASTIC was particularly special due to students completing their projects during COVID.
Starting from March, 2020, students participated in a training session for one semester. Online meetings were held weekly, and students learned how to search for published papers, make charts to collect results, and write research papers. Also, students found the specific fields that they were interested in exploring.
In July, students officially started to implement their research plans. Some students went to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and did many intriguing experiments under the guidance of experts. Due to COVID, some students decided to experiment at their homes. They bought experimental equipment by themselves and practiced independently.
During the experiment process, students dealt with sophisticated equipment and learned several experimental methods. Also, student learned how to think scientifically and practice with scientific methods. While doing the experiments by themselves, students encountered hardships, yet were able to learn from their failures, and gained many experimental skills, ultimately feeling the joy of success.
Through two months of experiments, students were trained in scientific thinking, had deeper understandings about professional knowledge, and are more familiar with the lives of scientific research.
By the end of Summer Vacation, students went back to school and did an interim defense. Students presented to the teachers the content of their projects and the results they have so far. Based on the questions, teachers asked if they could think about where the project has problems and where they did not fully comprehend.
After the defense, students completed their experiments, collected data, and wrote their research papers. During this period, students met with their instructors every week to process their data and write their research papers. While organizing the results, students can determine any inexact parts of the projects and add further experiments. While writing research papers, students learned to express their thoughts in scientific language. During this process, students’ scientific thinking was cultivated.
February, 2021, students enthusiastically did research applications and submitted their research projects to the 36th SHASTIC.
March 31st, 2021, students received the results of SHASTIC as a reward for their year of hard work. For the SHASTIC of this year, students learned many scientific bits of knowledges and were trained in the process of conducting scientific research.
Congratulations to students on the list! We hope that students can keep their love for science and continue on their hard work!
