Puxi Campus Grades 1-3: Brilliant Author’s Week

This week, students at the SHSID primary section G1 to G3 have been celebrating Author’s Week. Teachers have prepared various activities for students leading them to have a deep dive in these authors’ worlds. Let’s see what they got up to this week!

In first grade, we have been celebrating the weird and wonderful world of Dr.Seuss! Monday was “Mad Hat Monday” in a nod to one of Dr. Seuss’s most famous characters, The Cat in the Hat. Students came to school in their wackiest and craziest hats. Tuesday was “Twisted Up Tuesday”, which meant that students came to school all mixed up. Some of them had odd shoes and socks on, some of them had their jackets on back to front! To accompany the theme of the day, our students read the classic story Fox in Socks, which is guaranteed to get your tongue all twisted up! Wednesday’s PG classes also had a Dr.Suess theme, and the students read Bartholomew and the Oobleck. Thursday was “Tasty Thursday” which was all about the students’ favourite story Green Eggs and Ham. Students were all dressed in green, read the story, and made their own green eggs and ham out of clay. We think it looks good enough to eat. On the final day of the week, to commemorate Thing 1 and Thing 2, the students partnered up with a friend and became twins for the day. They dressed the same, sat beside each other, and even had special handshakes. We think they were just trying to confuse the teachers!

Grade 2 celebrated author’s week by studying the work of Mary Pope Osborne. This week kicked off with a “race to the moon” to see which class could read the most books by the author. Students also studied her book Midnight on the Moon in depth. Alongside class reading and comprehension, students engaged in fun activities such as writing a postcard from space, illustrating an alternative cover for the book, and an exciting “M” item hunt at home. These activities helped to reinforce literary appreciation and helped bring the book to life. Continuing our ethos of cross-curricular teaching, students also learned about the moon in Science, exploring using the moon globe app, making “craters” and building lunar rovers.

In third grade, we have been enjoying the memorable author Roald Daul. Roald Daul has invented more than 500 new words and character names and all of his books were inspired by the people or things living around him!

On Monday, students were introduced to Roald Daul and some of his most well known books. Students also enjoyed learning a little bit more about Roald Daul’s life and how he grew up! Tuesday, students dressed up as the character Sophie from the book The BFG in their pajamas! Wednesday, students had been eager to continue reading Roald Daul’s stories and tested their knowledge to see who was an expert at knowing the author and his famous books! Students participated in the whole class kahoot game! Questions include information about Daul’s characters or facts about his life! Thursday, students were able to choose a quote from one of Roald Daul’s books and make an image inspired by the story. Students also continued to build understanding on the theme in the story, and the message behind some of his famous books. Most of his books shows how goodwill always overcome the bad in the story; it is a vital lesson for students to learn! Friday, students dressed up as English idioms! Lastly, students enjoyed being creative and inventing their own Willy Wonka candy to be made at the Chocolate factory!

The week was a true success, and the students had a fun-filled and action-packed time delving into the weird and fantastic worlds of Dr.Seuss, Mary Pope Osborne, and Roald Daul! We are so looking forward to the author’s week in the next year !
