Middle School Math Department: Fascinating Pi Day
On the morning of March 12th, SHSID’s 8th grade participated in the much anticipated Pi Day. Every year on March 14th, a special day for people around the world is to celebrate the value of Pi. This year, all 8th-grade teachers and students worked together to plan fun and challenging Pi Day activities. They not only covered the discussion about π but also organized many interesting and stimulating math activities for the celebration.
Beforehand, all 8th-grade students made a poster about Pi. However, the poster’s shape was unique by itself—like a circle’s quadrant, and students were to decorate it with Pi-related objects. These works currently are displayed on the Middle school building’s bulletin boards and the ZhenTao Building’s 4th floor.
In total, there were more than fifteen games to choose from and play. Many of the games were familiar to many 8th graders, including the famed Rubik’s cube, the casual number game 2048 based on exponents of2, and the miniature competition that requires skills and speed, 24 points.
Participants were able to choose which activities to participate in, and they earned stamps by completing the corresponding tasks. They were then allowed to trade their collected stamps for prizes.
Pi day helps students relax and enjoy math from a different perspective and as a source of entertainment. It also served as a chance for students to enjoy mathematics and gain experience in discovering the influence of math on the world. We hope that students enjoyed the experience and will use it to find more mathematical inspiration in their daily lives. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Pi Day!
