Puxi Campus Grade 3: Social Studies—Apartheid Activity

March 11, 2021

This semester, grade three has kicked off social studies class by learning all about South Africa. Of course, an unforgettable part of South Africa’s history is apartheid. But what is apartheid? Before 1990, apartheid was a system in South Africa that separated people based on the color of their skin. During this period, black people were treated unfairly by white people and did not have the same rights.

To help students further explore this topic, we did an activity in social studies class to show the unfairness of segregation during South Africa’s apartheid. Students were in two randomized groups; one group sat on the floor during class to demonstrate the unfair treatment of non-whites in South Africa during this historic time. We talked for a long time about this modeling activity, after which the students ended class with big hearts and a very genuine realization of South Africa’s apartheid. It was eye-opening to all the students, and the teachers were very proud of the meaningful discussions. Some students had hurt feelings but developed a clear understanding of apartheid. We will continue to talk to all the students to ensure they understand and know everyone in our class is equally valued and wonderful!

Grade three learned that it is not fair to treat people differently and take away their rights. Everyone must be treated equally if we are to have a fair and just society.
