Middle School Math Department: Pi Day Fun!
On the afternoon of March 11, the students of grades 6 and 7 participated in the much anticipated Pi Day. Pi Day is a special day to celebrate a foundational part of mathematics: Pi, and people all over the world celebrate it on March 14. To encourage student engagement in the festivities, teachers and students worked together to plan fun and challenging Pi Day activities.
There were many creative and stimulating math activities for students to choose from. For example, memory games such as PI recitation, answering details about a picture, and listing 13 random numbers after a set time limit. There were also logical-reasoning games such as solving puzzles and finding logical loopholes by thinking outside the box. There were even hands-on games such as Rubik’s Cube, Klotski, Jenga, matchsticks, etc. Apart from these, there were interactive games such as catchphrase, wisdom pyramid, and so on.
In total, our Pi Day contained 29 different themed activities, which were simultaneously held in the grade 6 and 7 homerooms. Participants were able to choose which activities to participate in, and they earned stamps by completing the corresponding tasks. They were then allowed to trade their collected stamps for prizes.
Overall, Pi Day stimulated students’ interest in mathematics by challenging them to test and apply their knowledge in various games and activities. We hope that students enjoyed the experience and will use it to find more mathematical inspiration in their daily lives. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Pi Day!
