Grade 7: Understanding Puberty
Growing up is complicated! But the YD lesson on puberty helped clear it up and made it easier to talk about.
Puberty usually occurs at different ages for boys and girls, and different things happen to their bodies. Stretching over two class periods, boys and girls went to separate classrooms to learn about the topic. Students learned about things like body odor, skin changes, hair growth, and moods and emotions in both classrooms. Since boys and girls have unique bodies, they learned about differing topics, as well.
During the lesson, students were encouraged to feel safe and that their privacy and questions were valid and important. Puberty can be an embarrassing topic to learn about—not to mention a tough experience to go through!—so it’s necessary that students feel comfortable in the classroom.
Students engaged with the lesson by participating in several activities like a gallery walk and completing an exit ticket. Both boys and girls had the chance to ask teachers questions, no matter how silly or embarrassing it may have at first seemed. These questions remained anonymous and were answered by the end of class. Students will be learning more about puberty in the coming weeks—there’s a lot of information to cover!
Remember, if you’re feeling a certain way, it’s most likely that your peers have felt that way, too. Be kind and understanding toward each other! We at SHSID hope to build positive body image and confidence throughout students’ adolescent years.
