Middle School Math Department: G8 Math Project “Math in Daily Duty Work”

December 7, 2020

To improve on and help build the students’ senses of responsibility, every day at school, a student from each class is required to do “Duty” for the classroom. The student cleans the whiteboards, aligns desks and chairs, and makes the classroom clean and appealing. Last month, students carried out a math project which is closely relate to their daily duty work. In this math project, students need to record each section of their class’s duty score for a few days and the breakdown of their scores. They need to know what their class got for desk and chairs, cleanness, whiteboard, etc. After they obtained all of the data, they need to insert it into a matrix, with the day and each section of the score as the row and column. The final step of the project is to use their constructed matrix to calculate the average of their class’s duty score. The outstanding projects are on display in the hallways to share with all grade students.

This project gives students a perfect opportunity to understand and apply their math knowledge about matrices to daily life activities. Furthermore, this project also lets students put more effort to their daily duty work to protect the learning environment. Students are all actively involved in the project and are looking forward to the next funny math projects in the future.
