High School Biology Department: Open Class

December 3, 2020

DNA sequence records genetic information which determines various traits of an organism. However, twins with exactly the same DNA sequence have some different characteristics. Why does that happen? On November 27, 2020, Mr. Portillo from the high school biology department had an open class, “Modeling,” which revealed the answer via an interesting game.

In class, students investigated how environmental factors affect DNA expression through a simulation game. Since the game scenes were closely related to real life, students’ interest was triggered, leading to passionate discussions. Meanwhile, the activity of making a chromatin model in the game helped students to see interactions between DNA and histone in chromatin more directly, which, thus, allowed them to better understand why histone modification can affect gene expression, the change of which may alter phenotypes. The smart design of these class activities made abstract concepts easier to understand, and enabled students to learn while having fun.
