Puxi Campus Grades 1-3: Reading Week—Unlocking the Mysteries of a Good Book

November 27, 2020

At the end of November, we happily welcomed the Reading week of Grades 1-3 at SHSID. The theme of this year’s Reading Week is "Unlocking the Mysteries of Good Books.” All three grades have launched a series of exciting reading activities connected to this theme. Let’s take a look!

On Monday, students were asked to bring in a book for an activity called “Investigating our Favorite Books.” The students used their artistic skills to draw the cover of their books as if they were looking at them through a magnifying glass. We have displayed these magnifying glasses all over the school for students to look at and take a guess at what each book is. Students were being small detectives trying to solve the puzzle!

During reading week, all three grades participated in their favorite D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) activity. On Wednesday afternoon, when the bell rang, all students immediately dropped anything they were working on, put down what they were doing, and quickly picked up great books to read in their favorite reading spots. Look! Some students sat under the desks, some students sat on the teacher’s table, and some even sat inside their cubbies! But no matter where they were reading, not a single student made a sound, because they were already immersed in the world of reading!

One of the best parts of reading week, however, was having students dress up as their favorite book characters! On Thursday students and teachers all came to school costumed as their favorite book character to show their full understanding and love for so many amazing book characters. During the break time, everyone guessed each other’s characters according to their wonderful costumes. Some students did not even call others by their real names, they directly called each other by their character’s name! It really was like the characters in the book came to life!

To finish off a busy week celebrating our love for reading, we continued with our detective skills. We all brought in a mysterious object hidden in a brown bag or a picture hidden on an iPad, keeping it a secret. The students were able to give clues to their classmates and see if they could guess what’s hiding inside! The guesses were varied and drew lots of laughter.

Reading Week, with its rich, colorful forms and engaging activities, has greatly strengthened students’ enthusiasm for reading and created a great atmosphere of “love reading and sharing” around our campus. Reading Week may be coming to a close, but we know that children’s interest in reading will not be diminished. We hope that all the children will continue to develop a love for reading in the future.
