Grade 8: Career Day—The Power of Role Models For Students
On Thursday, November 26th, a few parents of eighth-grade students were invited to SHSID to give lectures about their careers. Six individual parents with jobs from all different industries volunteered to share their own opinions and stories about their careers with the students of eighth grade.
The parents prepared amazing speeches for the students. As an expert in the cosmetic world, 8(1) Tim’s mother started her speech with “how to deal with your pimples,” which deeply impressed all of the students. Then she explained the scientific formulae in cosmetics. 8(2) Jaden’s mother talked about the current pandemic and bio-statistics. She mentioned fascinating data on COVID-19 vaccines. At the end of her speech, she advised students to be multidisciplinary learners. The third speaker was 8(3) Shirley’s father. He went into details about venture capital, a form of private equity and financing that investors provide to start-up companies and small businesses. He motivated students to encounter failure and be willing to learn and grow. Then came 8(6) Daniel’s mother; she graduated from Princeton University and majored in computer science. As a science-fiction fan and art lover, she made a close connection with eighth-grade students. She also talked about tech investments, especially AI, IOT, and blockchain technologies. Then she asked students, “what will be the most important ability to have in the next 20 years?” The answers to the question helped students reflect upon their learning. In order to help students better understand the importance of insurance, 8(11) Amei’s father told students two engaging stories. The final parent, 8(12) Pieter’s father, shared his personal experiences and encouraged students to focus on the things they enjoy and do them to the best of their abilities.
“My father is my role model. He not only teaches me about the power of knowledge but also lets me know the power of ‘Never give up’.” Just as this student said, every single parent who participated in the career day event is a role model for the students as they are all leading figures in their different careers.
“This lecture was very informative and provided a lot of inspiration as to what I would like to pursue in the future. It was amazing to see the accomplishments of the parents. Getting to listen to all those professionals really points out all kinds of possibilities in our future lives,” the students commented.
After a day of enjoyable presentations, the students went home with big smiles on their faces and thoughts of a better tomorrow. At the end of the career day event, the students all showed great appreciation for what they currently have and reflected on their bright futures.
