Grade 6: Career Day

November 19, 2020

On Thursday, November 19th, our sixth-grade students welcomed parents for Career Day lectures. 12 parent volunteers with different jobs walked into the classrooms, shared their own career stories with the students, and showed the diverse opportunities each career offers.

The parents carefully prepared topics related to their daily lives and led interesting discussions with the students. One mom, also an expert in children’s early reading and learning experiences, talked about creating a book and the publishing process, which allowed the students to deeply understand the process of how a book is made. One father, a famous financial channel host, talked about how to prepare for college application in the future and shared his own learning and teaching experiences. The scientist moms and dads showed magnificent research results from oceanography, astronomy, pharmacy, and genetic sciences. The financial expert moms and dads used lively and simple expressions to explain topics like how investors work, risk control, tax processing, and other matters related to money. A multicultural enthusiast mom introduced the art of reading and her wonderful experience interviewing different authors. A mother who is a director of Human Resources shared her working experiences from different industries. Lastly, a father that is an experienced investor explained how AI can be programmed to benefit society.

All parent participants in the Career Day event are leading figures in their separate fields. They used their own job experiences to give illustrative yet exciting presentations to the students. The guests were enthusiastic, the classes were energetic, and the students were all highly inspired. For example, some students were already interested in programming, and after listening to the lecture about AI changing society, they are now more determined to learn programming well. After this amazing Career Day, the students have shown great aspiration for their futures. They also learned to treasure their current academic activities more in order to prepare for a better future.
