Grade 9: How to Better Remember

October 27, 2020

On October 22nd, ninth-grade students amassed in ZTB Lecture Hall. Mr. Rodriguez brought up a topic that is essential for students: “How to Better Remember".

After a brief introduction of background knowledge, he presented multiple ways of increasing memory. Firstly, chunking is grouping items into familiar and meaningful units, increasing the amount an individual can retain. He also suggested using mnemonics, which is associating images or an organization with the subject. A famous example of mnemonics is “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” which helps students remember the mathematical order of operations. Lastly, hierarchies are dividing information into subcategories.

Mr. Rodriguez also reminded the grade that it is more efficient to study over a distributed amount of time than cramming because distributed practice is better for long-term memory. Furthermore, he announced ways to measure and enhance retention (keeping something in memory). Recalling information currently not in consciousness, recognizing items previously learned, and relearning are all effective ways.

Last but not least, he brought up ways to improve memory which summarized the whole academy. He emphasized the importance of sleep and its positive effect on improving memory. Students learned valuable lessons that can be applied to their study.
