Grade 10: Creating a Sustainable Future Through Innovation
On October 22, SHSID invited special guests from Dow Chemical Company to introduce the topic of Creating a Sustainable Future Through Innovation to 10th Grade students.
The lecture was presented by Dr. Hongyu Chen and Dr. Tony Tang, who are research scientists in the field of chemical industry. Dr. Chen and Dr. Tang first briefly introduced the evolution and history of the Dow Chemical Company and emphasized on the significance of circular economy and sustainable development of the chemical industry. For example, they mentioned the importance of recycling and minimizing the amount of wastes during manufacturing is vital to the sustainability of chemical development.
Dr. Hongyu Chen’s research focuses on polymeric materials, including silicone-organic hybrid materials, heat conductive materials, crosslinking technologies for polyolefins and so on. His research led to the development of new materials for fibers, foams, films, tires, adhesives, print circuit boards, cables and so on. During the speech, he explained some of Dow's basic chemicals and raw materials, and how these materials can change everyone's lives, with emphasis on the application of some polymers in life.
Dr. Tang talked about the difference between industrial R&D and subject research, and told the students how to establish research topics, and how high school students can gradually determine their areas of passion and make unremitting efforts to this end. Also, Dr. Tang emphasized the significance of group collaboration and communication throughout the process. Unlike literature, whose analysis and studies are debatable and reconcilable, chemistry is an objective field of study that only has one clearly defined answer to each single question.
This special session given by Dow Chemical Company was highly informative, and it introduced students to the practical application of chemistry in the real world.
