Grade 6: Chinese Culture Week

October 23, 2020

On October 19th, we finally welcomed the first day of Chinese Culture Week!

Falling leaves fell off the trees sporadically, heralding the arrival of late autumn. The sixth-grade students of the International Department put on a variety of Chinese outfits from different dynasties and seemed to really become several famous people from history. Most of the girls were dressed in long skirts and looked like flowers when they danced. Some wore cheongsams while holding folding Chinese fans as though they were really the beautiful ladies of early 20th century China. Some people also brought cute little hair clips and small ribbons that could be seen billowing in the air when they ran. The boys also looked very handsome as some wore long shirts, others wore Han clothing, and still others wore armor to look like generals.

The event was during the first class of the afternoon. Though sometimes students may feel sleepy at this time since it is right after lunch, today that was certainly not the case. Everyone was dressed in their own carefully selected antique clothing with small ornaments and sat in their seats excited to begin.

The teachers first led us through a creative PowerPoint display. The students’ characters were all very fascinating and their creations were also very beautiful. Afterwards, the most exciting event began when students took their pens and paper and went to other classes to meet contemporary friends from the same dynasty as them. The students were able to chat for a few moments and tell some interesting stories about their roles. On their papers they wrote about their own characters, their own creations, and information about their dynasties. If the students could collect many signatures from their contemporaries then they would receive a big gift!

When the students were still having lots of fun, the bell rang and the first day of Chinese Culture Week ended in noise and laughter.
