Grade 7:The Tug of War Competition

October 22, 2020

On October 12th, Shanghai High School International Division held the annual sixth, seventh, and eighth grade sports day. On that sunny day, all the students and teachers gathered on the field and enjoyed a whole day of competition and sports.

The day after the sports meet, the tug of war matches among the seventh grade classes took place. First, the homeroom teachers went to randomly draw the classes their homerooms were competing against. Every class wanted their teacher to draw a weaker opponent so that they could win the competition. Finally the results were announced, and all the students chatted about the tactics they would use in beating their opponents. The hallway was very noisy that morning.

On October 13th, PE class was used for this tug of war championship and the first few rounds were for the elimination of the weaker teams. As each of the classes arrived on the court, they saw a long rope with a red belt tied around its middle placed horizontally on the ground. The belt represented victory for the team that could pull it to their side. Each class gathered the twenty classmates that were participating in their prearranged order and waited for the competition to start. Some looked pale and nervous but others looked really excited.

“Pick up the rope!” the referee yelled. The students all picked it up immediately and their faces looked determined to win. “Three, two, one, go!” shouted the referee.

“Pull, pull!” both sides screamed. Everyone bent backwards and clenched their teeth, using all their strength. After a few seconds, a whistle sounded and everyone stopped.

“The class on the left wins!” the referee declared. Yells, cheers, and congratulations came from the winning students and their supporters. After rounds and rounds of intense competition, the winners were announced. In first place was class 7(11), in second place was class 7(2), and in third place was class 7(6)! Let’s all warmly congratulate them!

At last, two rounds of tug of war in which students competed against teachers were held. Both teachers and students were in high spirits and and both sides wanted to win. The whistle blew and the first round started. The students all pulled as hard as they could, and in a few seconds, they’d beaten the teachers. The teachers didn’t like to lose, and so they were eager to prove themselves in the second round. The participants used all their strength, and their faces were red as apples while sweat as large as raindrops dripped down their cheeks. The red belt was going to the teachers’ side, but the audience yelled to cheer on the students. Finally, the trumpet of victory blew, and a loud cheering grew from all of the students—they’d won!

The tug of war games ended happily, and all the people involved learned the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.
