SHSID Students Performed Well in the UKCHO Competition

July 2, 2020

On April 12th, 2020, 1200 students across China participated in the UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) from not the expected location of the various test centers, but the comfort of their very own homes. Among them, 19 were students from SHSID, who competed side by side with participants from 234 other high schools in China. In late June, the results were out.

Due to the pandemic, the contest, originally to be held on February 15th in offline test centers, was instead entered via an online platform on April 12th after being delayed for nearly two months. The unusual circumstances certainly had their impact on the participants; yet in spite of the looming pandemic and the unfamiliar testing method used, the students' hard work paid off. A total of 8 golds, 7 silvers, and 1 bronze was awarded, which more than doubles the number of gold awards earned last year.

The UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) is hosted by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The RSC, with headquarters in London and Cambridge, is one of the world's most influential chemistry organizations. With over 50,000 members and an international publishing and knowledge business, they are the UK's professional body of chemical scientists, supporting and representing their members and bringing together chemical scientists from all over the world. The problems featured in the UK Chemistry Olympiad often stimulate a lot of debate, raising awareness of what chemistry is all about. It provides a great opportunity for the students to develop and showcase some of the skills they'll need at university and beyond. Congratulations to the award winners, and thank you to all the participants for your effort and dedication!
