Grade 9: Power of Interests
Passion has always been something to connect people. Due to COVID-19, this year’s SHSID students had more time to explore their passion. The passion they discovered brought them new friends as well as new opportunities. In the 16th week, the ninth grade had a sharing about passion. A student who just discovered his passion told that, “Eight students in my grade like the same game, from this common interest, we began to talk about other interests and passion, we started to share secrets, and now we have become best friends”. Afterwards, he and his friends explored more interests together — these include music, art, and debate. Under the influence of his friends, he participated in more clubs and activities related to their interests. Gradually, the bond between him and his friends became increasingly strong. Now, his friends and SHSID have become a second home to him.
Other than bringing friends with a common interest, finding your passion also means more opportunities and more motivation to learn. A ninth grader who has found a direction to work towards after finding his true passion says, “I realized that I was just a tiny being in a huge expanding universe and consequently pondered the purpose of life. I found that our bodies are hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon and oxygen which were created from supernova explosion. This completely changed my view. We are part of the universe and the universe part of us. I began to develop a passion in physics and astronomy”. This student, who was once lost, now knew that he wanted to be someone who brings more knowledge to the human race. After finding his passion, he attended many summer camps, including CTY and HSYLC. These summer camps further allowed him to invest in his passion.
The sharing helped ninth graders understand more deeply that finding their passion can bring them a group of friends with a common language and also a direction to work towards.
