Grade 10: Sharing about Life Interests

May 22, 2020

In the second week of May, Hayden from 10(2) shared his experience in the field of coffee making. Hayden learned about coffee for the first time in his PBL class in the second semester of grade nine. Mr. Sun led them into the world of coffee. They got to know about the long history of coffee and its rich culture. Learning about various brewing methods and making unique brewing plans for every kind of coffee bean kindled his interest and enthusiasm for the coffee culture, and he started to be deeply committed to that culture.

Before that, he thought coffee was just like wine—an exclusive drink for the adults. On the Internet there were always studies of the advantages and disadvantages of drinking coffee, which led to his first impression of coffee as a kind of bitter "medicine" that can keep people awake. Just as he felt a bit sleepy in the class, "Ding!" the coffee was ready. Then the aroma of coffee came to him, and he could not help inhaling deeply. In his mind, there was the sweet-and-sour taste of tropical fruits, and then it turned into the light fragrance of jasmine flowers. This feeling really shocked him. Immersed in the aroma of coffee, he opened his eyes widely to see the teacher shaking the clear liquid in the pot and pouring it into every paper cup. On that day, he had his first taste of coffee—real coffee.

From then on, he began to study coffee. To avoid being cheated by coffee sellers, he learned about the vessels and beans for hand-made coffee in detail and made an investigation of the market. After a period of reading relevant materials, viewing the evaluations of coffee masters, and visiting famous coffee shops, he had some of his own understanding of coffee. To put it simply, he began to understand his preferences and take deep interest in the whole industry. There are always some people who keep asking him: "What's the use of your expensive vessels and coffee beans?" "What on earth is the difference between the coffee you made and ordinary coffee?" "Do you feel tired of washing the cups, cleaning the bean grinder, and using such a sophisticated brewing method?" "Why not just go to the coffee bar and buy a cup of 20-yuan coffee? It tastes good!" He only wants to say that when you make coffee by yourself, the aroma of coffee can surprise you. This is an unforgettable experience which cannot be obtained by simply spending money.

Trying different brewing methods and collecting all kinds of coffee beans is more like a delicate engineering project. Only with full concentration can a person make a wonderful cup of coffee. His countless failures are simply experiences that make him learn more and make adjustments in the next experiment. In today's world of industrialization and rapid development, the slow process of brewing hand-made coffee can bring about immense satisfaction. Replicate the smell that made your heart throb and have a good mood every day. It's so easy to record the beautiful moments in life in this way.
