IMMC news

May 20, 2020

On the rainy morning of May 16th, SHSID middle school participants received their IMMC (International Mathematical Modeling Challenge) results. This year, SHSID teams achieved wonderful results: two teams were awarded the Finalist ranking (Top 7%), seven teams were awarded the Meritorious ranking (First Prizes), and four teams were awarded the Honourable Mention ranking (Second Prizes).

Staring at their achievements, this group of young, passionate students realize that the efforts they have spent in the past few months have been life changing. Initially, multiple SHSID teams were unfamiliar with the process of mathematical modeling. To help the students better prepare for this year's competition, Ms. Yan Jie, SHSID middle school IMMC supervisor, gave them lectures during lunch breaks and invited students who attended IMMC in previous years to share their experiences. Furthermore, Ms. Yan recommended a few math modeling books, which helped the students to learn different methods of modeling.

Although one round of IMMC only lasted for 96 hours, the participants experienced a variety of emotions: the anxiety before receiving the topic, the confusion after scanning through the given document for the first time, the enlightenment after research, the intense discussion of their models, the consistent editing and reviewing of their paper, and the immense tension right before the deadline. As the SHSID IMMC participants were overwhelmed by the joy of their excellent results, the difficulties and challenges that they’ve been through emerged in their minds: some debated continuously with their teammates to elect the best strategy, some spent hours on a formula that they later found erroneous, and some became more anxious as the deadline approached.

SHSID students gained new knowledge, analyzed real-life problems, and understood the power of mathematics through IMMC. These four days also trained their abilities to explore new things. In the beginning, they knew almost nothing about mathematical modeling and were extremely anxious. However, with hard work and active participation, it turned out that they were able to complete this challenge!

In the era with rapid scientific and technological development, mathematics can help everyone better understand, analyze, and solve practical problems. SHSID students are so motivated to put more efforts to explore the wonderful world of mathematics!
