Grade 11: SDLFpsyche Club Helps Students Release Stress and Pressure

May 14, 2020

If you take a close look at this logo, you can easily pick out two acronyms that share the letter S: SDLF (Storms Don't Last Forever) and SWAR (the Sun Will Always Rise). When put together, this is the core message of the club, SDLFpsyche. This is the club’s motto and the driving force behind what the members are doing for the community of high school students.

SDLFpsyche, founded by an eleventh grader in November 2019, is an organization dedicated to educating the public on the various fields of psychology and psychological disorders as well as raising awareness on mental health issues, especially teenage depression and suicide. The club plan on achieving those goals through written articles in both English and Chinese that are published on theirofficial WeChat account (search "SDLFpsyche" to view the past articles) as well as their website that will be launched later this year, which focuses more on raising awareness and removing negative stigmas and misconceptions toward teenage mental health problems.

Currently, SDLFpsyche is run by a 14-people team that includes both SHSID and non-SHSID students. They provide a platform for people to combine their passion(s) in writing, translating and/or designing with a strong interest in psychology and currently have 27 original articles from three broad genres: scientific, everyday life, and academic. The majority of the articles are within the scientific genre, aiming to educate and explain the various different mental disorders recorded in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) as well as introduce different treatment methods available for patients with mental disorders. At the start of last month, the club launched two new genres: everyday life articles, in which they inform people on ways to stay mentally healthy and develop healthy coping mechanisms, and academic review guides, which provide AP Psychology review guides. In addition, the members also introduced a submission system that allows survivors of mental disorders to share their stories and discuss journeys toward healing and recovery.

As we all know, the COVID-19 outbreak disrupted students' schedules, which has put a lot of stress and pressure on high schoolers, especially eleventh graders as they are preparing for college applications. Through the new emotional first-aid series, the club hopes to reach out to peers that might be extremely stressed and anxious, unsure of what to do, and provide them with ways to healthily cope with their feelings. Not only would SDLFpsycheaddress negative emotions and mood states, but it would also provide practical ways to deal with them in a healthy and down-to-earth manner. The end goal in this particular series is to spread a message of self-love and hope to people that they are not alone in their struggles, anxieties and fears; storms don’t last forever, and the sun will always rise.
