SHSID Students Came in First and Second Place in the KWHS Competition

April 10, 2020

On April 8th, two SHSID high school student teams received great news: they placed first and second in the final round of the Knowledge@Wharton High School (KWHS) Investment Competition for Region 1.

The Knowledge@Wharton High School (KWHS) Investment Competition is a free, global, and online investment simulation for high school students. This competition is organized by the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania. Teams consist of four to seven students. Each team manages a portfolio of $100,000 in virtual cash over the course of 10 weeks using Wharton’s Online Trading and Investment Simulator (OTIS). Each team also creates an investment strategy to ensure that their simulated client achieves the long-term goal of building up more wealth.

Each year, hundreds of teams from high schools all over the world participate in this challenging investment competition. Teams are divided into four regions according to their geographic locations. Teams from countries located in Eastern and Central Asia belong to Region 1. The competition starts in October each year and usually ends in March. This year, because of the outbreak of COVID-19, the final round of the competition was held online via Zoom. Only the top 12 teams are selected to enter the final round. Money Scooper, the champion team, led by Kelly Huang, consists of seven 11th grade SHSID students. They started to learn about KWHS in grade 10 and participated in the 2018-2019 KWHS competition. That competition helped them learn a lot of new knowledge about investment. They made it into the final round last year but didn’t make it into the top 3. Their experience last year helped them improve their investment strategies and also gain a lot of valuable experience. During the 2019-2020 KWHS competition, they worked hard together again. When the great news was announced online via Zoom on April 8th, they were very excited that the two years of hard work had paid off. Now they are preparing to take part in the global final competition in May, which will be conducted online as well. They will have the opportunity to present their investment strategy to professors and professional judges of Wharton. We wish them all the best for the global final competition!
